And this is where the Cow type appears—an elegant solution to a problem you might not have even thought about.

The Problem That Cow Solves

And here’s the main problem: the calling code must explicitly track through an additional parameter needs_free whether memory needs to be freed. Moreover, casting away constness through type casting is technically a dangerous operation that can lead to undefined behavior if someone tries to modify the “borrowed” string.

How This Looks in C++

C++ offers more tools, but still doesn’t produce a good solution. Here’s a typical approach using std::string_view (I worked with C++17, so the example is in that version, maybe other versions have more interesting solutions, if there are let me know):

Here we encounter a different problem: std::variant requires explicit handling through std::visit or index checking. You can’t just use the result as a string—you first need to figure out which exact type is stored inside. This makes the code verbose and less intuitive. Additionally, std::string_view only appeared in C++17, and in older code this problem was solved in even more awkward ways.

How This Looks in Go

In Go the situation is interesting: the language doesn’t give you low-level control over whether memory allocation occurs or not.

In Go you surrender control to the garbage collector and hope that the compiler is smart enough to optimize your code. In the case of strings.TrimSpace, if the string doesn’t require changes, Go can indeed return the same string thanks to strings being immutable. But this is an implementation detail you can’t explicitly rely on. You have no way to guarantee the absence of memory allocation or explicitly control this behavior. If performance is critical and you want to avoid unnecessary allocations, you’ll have to write more complex code using byte slices and manually track whether data was modified.

Returning to Rust

After these examples, it becomes obvious why Rust’s approach with the Cow type is so interesting. It combines the explicit control of C and C++ with the ease of use close to Go, but without needing to rely on compiler optimizations or a garbage collector. You know exactly when memory allocation occurs, the type system guarantees safety, and the syntax remains clean and expressive. Cow allows you to have the best of both worlds: deterministic memory management without cognitive load and manual tracking of resource ownership.

What is Cow

Cow stands for “Clone on Write”—cloning upon writing. It’s an enumeration (enum) with two variants:
