It is when they include lightweight tutorials in the spirit of “microservices in twenty-four hours” or books with loud titles but superficial content. I understand they are needed for quick starts, but if you want to build systems that will work for years and will not fall apart at the first serious load, you need to dig deeper.

Foundation: Algorithms and Mathematics

I will start with the most painful part. “The Art of Computer Programming” by Donald Knuth. Yes, these are those famous four volumes that everyone nods at but few actually read cover to cover. And you know what? That is exactly how it should be. This is not a novel you read in one breath. This is an encyclopedia of methods that you return to again and again when you face a specific problem.

When I first opened the third volume about searching and sorting, I thought I already knew everything about these basic things. It turned out I understood only the surface. Knuth shows not just “how this works,” but “why exactly this way, what alternatives exist, and what is the cost of each decision.”

To work with these volumes, you will need “Concrete Mathematics” by the same Knuth coauthored with Graham and Patashnik. This is not just a supplement, it is your mathematical dictionary for understanding algorithm analysis.

If TAOCP seems too academic (and that is normal), start with “Introduction to Algorithms” by Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest, and Stein. This book is often called simply CLRS by the first letters of the authors’ surnames. It became the de facto standard in universities for good reason. The authors not only show how an algorithm works but also prove its correctness and analyze performance boundaries. Pay special attention to chapters on B-trees, hashing, and streaming algorithms. These are directly what you will encounter when developing servers.

How Computers Actually Work

I remember how surprised I was at how much understanding how the processor cache works affects performance. You can write algorithmically optimal code, but if you do not account for how data is arranged in memory, you lose performance by orders of magnitude.

“Computer Systems: A Programmer’s Perspective” by Bryant and O’Hallaron is a book that shows the entire chain: from how the processor executes instructions to how virtual memory and linking work. When you understand why input-output delays happen, you start designing your systems completely differently.

Another gem is “Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces” by Arpaci-Dusseau. You know what caught me in it? The authors constantly ask “why?” Not just “this is how the scheduler works,” but “why is it designed exactly this way, what were the alternatives, what trade-offs did the developers make?” And yes, the book is available for free online, which is rare for materials of such quality.

If you want to go even deeper, look at “The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System” by McKusick. This is already hardcore: analysis of a real operating system from the inside. Examples are in C, but the concepts are universal and applicable anywhere.

Distributed Systems: Where the Magic Begins

When your application runs on one server, everything is relatively simple. But once you distribute it across multiple machines, interesting questions begin: how to synchronize state? What to do if the network temporarily breaks? How to guarantee data consistency?

“Designing Data-Intensive Applications” by Martin Kleppmann was a revelation for me. Kleppmann does not just tell about technologies, he shows trade-offs. Want strong consistency? Be ready to sacrifice availability. Need high availability? You will have to accept eventual consistency. The book teaches not to look for the “right” solution but to choose what is appropriate for your specific task.

“Distributed Systems: Principles and Paradigms” by Tanenbaum and Van Steen is a more formal approach. Mathematical models, logical clocks, causal relationships. Rigorous exposition of the CAP theorem and FLP impossibility. This book answers the question “is it even possible to build a perfect distributed system?” (spoiler: no, but you can understand why).

And here is what matters: read the original sources. Lamport’s paper “Time, Clocks, and the Ordering of Events in a Distributed System” explains the concept of logical time better than all textbooks combined. “Paxos Made Simple” by the same Lamport shows how to achieve consensus in a distributed system (although the title is deceptive since “simple” is relative there). “Harvest, Yield, and Scalable Tolerant Systems” by Brewer and Fox gives a different perspective on the CAP theorem. These papers are ten to twenty pages each, but they contain the essence that hundreds of articles later retell.

Networks and Performance

If you write server code and have not read “UNIX Network Programming” by W. Richard Stevens, you need to fix that. The first volume is about the networking API, the second about interprocess communication. Yes, the examples are in C, yes, in places the code looks archaic, but the principles are eternal. How sockets work, what epoll and kqueue are, how to organize efficient interaction between processes—all of this is in Stevens.

“Systems Performance: Enterprise and the Cloud” by Brendan Gregg is my desk reference when the system starts slowing down and I do not understand why. Gregg worked in large data centers and knows how to analyze performance in real conditions. Latency versus throughput, flame graphs, using eBPF for deep profiling. The “Observability Tools” chapter will teach you to look at the system with the right instruments instead of poking your finger in the air.

Data and Reliability

“Transaction Processing: Concepts and Techniques” by Jim Gray and Reuter is a classic from nineteen ninety-two that is still relevant. If you want to understand how transactions really work, what ACID means, how a system recovers after a failure, this is where you go. Written long before the NoSQL revolution, but the principles apply to modern storage systems like LevelDB or RocksDB.

“Database Internals” by Alex Petrov shows what happens inside a database management system. LSM trees, indexes, how distributed queries are executed. Petrov explains trade-offs excellently: why LSM trees are good for writing but pay for it when reading, what price we pay for write amplification.

“Release It!” by Michael Nygard is a collection of stories about how systems fail in production and how to prevent it. Circuit breakers, bulkheads, chaos engineering. Nygard describes real incidents and shows how proper architecture could have prevented them or at least mitigated the consequences.

Now About Rust

I deliberately left Rust for last because I wanted to first talk about the foundation that does not depend on the language. But if you chose Rust for backend development (and it is an excellent choice), there are books that will help you squeeze the maximum out of it.

“Rust for Rustaceans” by Jon Gjengset is not for beginners. If you are just starting with Rust, first go through the official “The Rust Programming Language.” But when the basic syntax no longer raises questions, Gjengset will show you the depth. How the borrow checker actually works, how concurrency is organized without data races, how to optimize code at a level close to C. This is a book for those who want to write systems code and understand what happens under the hood.

“Zero to Production in Rust” by Luca Palmieri is pure pragmatism. Web frameworks like Actix or Axum, working with databases through SQLx, microservice architecture, observability. Palmieri shows examples of production code that you can use in real projects. This is not an academic work, it is a guide to action.

Do not forget about the official Rust documentation, especially the Nomicon (The Rustonomicon) about unsafe code and FFI. I also recommend reading RFCs—Request for Comments—where changes to the language are discussed. There you can see how language developers think about trade-offs, what decisions they make and why.

What Is Not Here (and Why)

I deliberately excluded books like “Clean Code” or “Grokking Algorithms” from the list. Not because they are bad, but because they solve different problems. These are books for quick starts, for forming basic skills. But if you want to build systems that will work for decades, you need a different depth.

There are no books about specific frameworks here because frameworks change. There are no tutorials on Docker or Kubernetes because these are tools, not fundamental knowledge. In five years new tools may appear, but the principles of distributed systems or transactions will remain the same.

How to Read All This

The main thing I understood over the years: these books are not read over a weekend with a cup of coffee. You will need a pencil, notebook, sometimes a compiler to check examples. Some chapters will need to be reread several times. And that is normal.

Do not try to read everything at once. Choose one book that solves your current task or closes a gap in knowledge. Read it, experiment, apply it in practice. Then move to the next one.

Another tip: read source code. SQLite is about one hundred thousand lines of very high-quality C code, a reference for database engine core architecture. Analyze Jepsen reports about bugs in Cassandra or etcd—there are real examples of how distributed systems break in production.

Conclusion

This list is not for those who want to “quickly learn backend in a month.” This is for engineers who are going to build systems that work for twenty years or more. For those who are interested not just in “how to do this” but in “why it works exactly this way.”

Knuth, Lamport, Gray, Stevens—these are authors who have set standards for decades. Their works require effort, but this effort pays off every time you face a complex systems problem and understand how to solve it.

Start with what interests you right now. Dig deeper. And remember: good systems are built on understanding fundamental principles, not on knowing trendy frameworks.
